The process of obtaining Romanian citizenship is not a complicated process, but it involves taking a series of steps. Next I will try to describe briefly, what steps you should take to obtain Romanian citizenship.
Submitting an application
The application for granting Romanian citizenship is submitted in person or, in duly justified cases, based on a prior written approval, by proxy with a special and authentic power of attorney at the headquarters of the National Authority for Citizenship in Bucharest. After submitting the application, the chairman of the Citizenship Commission sets the deadline by which the Citizenship Commission will verify the fulfillment of the necessary conditions for granting Romanian citizenship, if the file is incomplete, the president of the Commission requests the completion of the file.
Settlement of the application by the Citizenship Commission
At the deadline established for the debate of the application, the Citizenship Commission verifies the fulfillment of the necessary conditions for granting the Romanian citizenship. If the conditions for granting Romanian citizenship are met, the Commission establishes, within a period of 6 months, the appointment of the person for the interview.
According to art.161 of the Romanian Citizenship Law, in case the person who requested the granting of Romanian citizenship is investigated in a criminal case, the Citizenship Commission may order the suspension of the procedure for granting Romanian citizenship until the completion of that case, if there are no other reasons for rejecting the application.
Interview
The Citizenship Commission verifies the fulfillment of the conditions for granting Romanian citizenship, respectively the applicant's knowledge of the Romanian language (written and read), of basic notions of Romanian culture and civilization, to a sufficient extent to integrate into social life, as well as knowledge of the provisions The Constitution of Romania and the national anthem.
Commission report
If the applicant is declared admitted to the interview, the Commission will draw up a report in which it will mention the meeting of the legal conditions for granting Romanian citizenship.
If the conditions required by law for granting citizenship are not met, as well as in case of not promoting the interview or not appearing unjustifiably to support it, the Commission, in a reasoned report, proposes to the President of the National Authority for Citizenship to reject the application.
Issuing the order of the President of the National Authority for Citizenship
Issuing the order of the President of the National Authority for Citizenship
The President of the National Authority for Citizenship, finding that the conditions provided by the provisions of the Romanian Citizenship Law are met, issues the order granting Romanian citizenship, which is communicated to the applicant by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt, within 3 days from the date of issuing the order.
If the president of the National Authority for Citizenship finds that the conditions provided by the Romanian Citizenship Law are not met, he will proceed by rejecting by order the application for granting Romanian citizenship, an order which is immediately communicated to the applicant by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt.
Taking the oath
Romanian citizenship is granted on the date of taking the oath of allegiance to Romania.
Within 6 months from the date of communication of the order of the President of the National Authority for Citizenship. After taking the oath, the Citizenship Commission issues to the holder the Romanian citizenship certificate, signed by the president of the National Authority for Citizenship. The certificate contains security features and a photo of the holder.
If the minor children acquire Romanian citizenship together with their parents or with one of them, they will be registered in the parents' citizenship certificate and will not take the oath.
